  • Super Transfer Pump with Removable Pre-Filter Super Transfer Pump with Removable Pre-Filter

The Vintage Shop | Super Transfer Pump | Variable Speed Diaphragm Pump | 0-3 GPM | Self-Priming | Quick Disconnect Pre-Filter | Tubing Included

    75 reviews

When siphoning is impractical or too time consuming, the home winemaker needs a pump. We helped pioneer the use of diaphragm pumps as an economical, gentle method to move small volumes of wine. This new take on an old favorite includes speed control. Now you can dial in the flow from 0 to 3 gallons per minute. Gentle, economical, flexible, and wow are all adjectives we would use to describe the performance. When this pump was first introduced to us, we loved the idea, but had concerns that the speed control would compromise the longevity of the motor. We build much larger pumps (our ChunkyPumps for commercial wineries) and normally you need a $700 frequency drive to control motor speed. However, we kept in touch with the manufacturer and after three years in which he has not had any issues, and after our own testing, we are now sold that this pump performs as promised. The manufacturer offer a 1 year warranty. A diaphragm pump works by moving wine through one pulsating diaphragm into the next. In this design, as opposed to a centrifugal pump which has a small head spinning at high speeds, the shear value is small meaning the wine is not as "beat up". A diaphragm pump is self-priming, meaning that it will "pump air" creating suction that will pull liquid out of your container and into the pump head. This makes the pump very easy to use for the home winemaker. This pump comes with 1/2" barbed ports for easy connectivity.  Comes with 4' tubing on both sides. 110 Volts, 0.5 Amp, 60 Hz. Includes a built-in pre filter to help prevent solid materials from entering the pump head and potentially damaging the diaphragms, which would prevent the pump from being able to move liquid. The clear plastic top of the pre filter unscrews for cleaning.

  • Self Priming Diaphragm Pump - Shurflo Self Priming Diaphragm Pump - Shurflo

    Self-Priming Shurflo Diaphragm Pump

    39 reviews

The ultimate pump for home winemaking use. Self-priming (will push air) so that it can draw out of a tank. Gentle diaphram action so as to not "beat up" the wine. Made of food-grade, NSF approved, materials polypropylene and santoprene, so no metallic interaction with wine. Pumps 3 gallons per minute. Flow can be restricted with an inline valve positioned on the outflow side. Self-regulating motor is designed to temporarily shut down, and then turn back on, when restriction pressure exceeds pump capacity. Has a heat limitation of 125 degrees Fahrenheit so cannot be used in brewing applications. Pump is equipped with 1/2" Male NPT posts on the inlet and outlet. Does not include the plastic barb fittings you will need to purchase separately. Please see the "You Might Also Need" section below for our recommendations regarding which fittings to attach to the pump. Please Note: The diaphragms in this pump are very sensitive to sediment and particulates and can be damaged if any solids are taken into the pump head. We recommend using an Inline Pre-Filter (FIL26) if you think there's a risk of sucking up solids with your inlet hose (pumping during pressing, for instance). • Cleaning Ball for Tubing - PLACEHOLDER

Cleaning Ball for Tubing (1/2 in. - 2.5 in. ID)

    1 review

Cleaning balls are super handy for scrubbing the inside of your transfer tubing. Simply insert into the end of the suction-side tubing connected to your pump and turn the pump on. Be careful not to draw the ball in to the pump head. For the outlet side of the pump, disconnect the tubing from the pump, insert the ball, reattach and turn on the pump. for best results repeat several times on each side. If stains persist, fill your lines with a warm PBW solution and let sit for about an hour before scrubbing again. Available in sizes for 1/2", 1", 1.5" and 2.5" inner diameter tubing.

  • Sanitary Filter Sanitary Filter

    Sanitary Filter

    49 reviews

An inline sanitary filter that filters down to .027 micron with a 99.99% efficiency. Use it anywhere you need to keep something sanitary. Both 1/4" and 3/8" tubing will attach and it will snugly fit in any standard stopper as well. Check out this list of suggested uses: Airlock: The most common use might be as an airlock on any kind of fermenter. Unlike other small sanitary filters, this unit fits perfectly into a stopper. Works great for conical fermenters, like the Fermentap and our own Stainless Conicals, where displacement air is taken in when samples are taken or trub is dumped. Using the sanitary filter as airlock also eliminates the concern of drawing air back in as hot liquid cools and contracts in a fermenter. Not appropriate for long term storage of beer or wine as it is not an oxygen barrier. Inline Aeration/Oxygenation Filter: With an oxygenation or aeration sytem, such as our FE375 or FE380, it will filter contaminants out of oxygen or air. It is connected inline between pump/O2 tank and s/s diffusion stone. Hand Pumps: Some breweries use this filter with the breweries hand pump system. Air going back into the cask is sanitized through this filter. This has extended shelf life of Real Ales by up to 2 weeks! CO2 Filtration: Used inline with your CO2 Kegging setup, this piece can be used to filter out any potential contaminants from your CO2 Tank. Storage: Store in Ziplock bag in a dry place with minimal moisture exposure. Can last up to 1 year. Discard if there are any signs of discoloration. About the inline filters: There are two sides to the filter - an "in" and an "out". The direction you use doesn't matter, however, you want to take note of which way you first push air through it and always keep it that way. There is an arrow on the edge of the filter housing that we use to keep the air flow going one direction when using it. The filter should never get wet, so don't try and sanitize it by dunking it in sanitizer. If you want to clean the outside of it, use Alpet D2. To store the filter, use a little tinfoil on the "In" of the filter and store in a zip-lock bag. This product qualifies as a HEPA filter under US government standards. STORE DRY AT ALL TIMES. DO NOT SANITIZE FILTER. **NOTE: Temporarily shipping a smaller diameter unit due to supply chain issues**

In winemaking, transferring the product from one container to another is referred to as racking and can be done in one of three ways:

Siphoning

With small volumes, racking is usually done by gravity using a simple siphon set-up. This is a good, low-cost solution that works well and is ideal if you only have a couple of carboys. However, there is a catch: since siphoning relies on gravity, the transferring vessel must be situated higher than the receiving one in order for the process to be effective. If you are using a vessel larger than a carboy, this setup may not be physically possible. An alternate method of transferring the wine will be preferable. In addition, siphon set-ups are pretty slow, which mayor not be a factor for you if you happen to be working with larger volumes.

Wine Pump
For situations where a gravity transfer is not possible or you are working with larger volumes, you will need a wine pump. There are different kinds of pumps that are suited to different jobs. Some are made for must transfers and “pump-overs” (pumping wine from the bottom of the vessel back over the cap during fermentation) because they are able to pass solids. Others are made solely for pumping liquid, and are used for wine transfers, barrel work, mixing/stirring tanks, filtering and bottling. Pumps are very helpful and are indeed convenient to have around. That said, they do have some potential drawbacks. Any pump will introduce some level of physical agitation to a wine. At strong enough levels this handling can become damageing to the wine’s structure. In addition, if not set up correctly some pump styles will stop flowing wine even though the pump is still running. This is due to an air/gas pocket forming in the pump head and is referred to as cavitation.

When investigating which wine pump might be best for you, the following questions are a good place to start:

  • Will the wine pump be used for fermentation (must/solids) or cellar work (liquid only)? This will determine which kind of pump you may need.
  • Will you only be working with carboys or perhaps doing a lot of larger barrel/tank work? This will influence what kind of flow-rate/throughput size you may be looking for.

Pressurized Gas
For barrel work, one of the most ideal systems for moving wine is a barrel transfer tool that uses pressurized gas to push the wine instead of a pump. This is a very gentle and effective way to move wine between barrels. The downsides to gas are that it can only be used with barrel-to-barrel transfers, it requires a gas set-up, and it uses a large volume of gas.

Please feel free to contact us by giving us a call at 1-800-600-0033 or by e-mailing us at info@morewinemaking.com with any wine pump related questions. We will be more than happy to help you choose the wine pump that best suits your individual needs.
