Blichmann Hop Blocker

    Description

Traditional screen filters draw from the bottom of the kettle — immediately sucking all pellet hops and fine break material into the screen, where they plug. In Blichmann Engineering's HopBlocker™, preferential flow leaves settled fine break material (hops and trub) undisturbed at the bottom of the kettle while draining the majority of the wort through a coarse filter from the top down. When the wort level is just a couple of inches from the bottom of the kettle, the fine filter element is then exposed by lifting the shield, and the remainder of the wort is filtered. It's an intuitive design that allows the fine filter to work only on a small portion of the wort, not all of it. The HopBlocker™ will filter up to 95% of the break material and hops from your wort without plugging. While it is designed specifically to complement Blichmann Engineering's BoilerMaker™ brew kettles, the HopBlocker™can be installed in any manufacturer's kettle or keg.

PLEASE NOTE: The HopBlocker is designed for use with pellet hops only. Whole/loose hops will plug the unit. While using whole hops, or a mix of whole and pellet hops, you must bag your whole hops in a large muslin grain bag. This will not affect the utilization rate and will result in significantly less wort loss.

Customers said this filter effectively blocks hops and debris from entering fermenters. "Does a great job of blocking the junk" and produces clear wort. However, some noted it can clog easily, requires whirlpooling technique, and works best with specific kettle setups. Quality build praised, though usability varies by brewing system.

        Works for me

My 10 gallon IPA recipe has almost a pound of hops added from 15 minutes through whirlpool. I have no problem whirlpooling for 30 minutes and letting it settle for 20-30 minutes. There is a nice hop cone from the whirlpool and the hop blocker definitely blocks significantly more for me than just letting things settle. I've never had it clog but I don't rush it into the fermenter so dial back your pump. I'm getting very clear wort and finished beer. I use the Blichmann kettle and hop rocket as well. Believe it or not this pic is wort clarity going into the fermenter. http://oi63.tinypic.com/24v8ymf.jpg

        Does it's job

It keeps out most of the junk. Will clog and it's not always accessible to clean.

        Well-made but poorly designed

The build on this is solid and attractive but it clogs very easily and I suspect is not allowing enough circulation for full hopping of the brew.

        What's the trick?

Filter - 5 stars doesn't clog and filters really well Usability - 2 stars. You can't whirlpool with it in a small kettle. I use a 10 gallon kettle and i haven't figured out a good way to get it going yet. Without a whirlpool this thing loses a ton of wer to the trub

        works great for counterflow chiller

I made my own counter-flow chiller (from J. Palmer's "How To Brew") with 1/4" copper refrigerator water line tubing and a heavy duty garden hose and a little 1/2" copper tubing (for the ends). The leaf hops filter the hot break from going into the fermenter and the hop blocker does a great job of blocking the junk. I made a Pilsner with a pound of Saaz (14 gal. batch) and the hot break stayed with the leaves. I would not think it would work so good with pellets. And I use the 20 gal. Blich Boilermaker. So... ya gotta have a dip tube to use it.

        Disappointed

It kind of works but it's a hassle. You need a way to raise the level you better not tip it you have to whirlpool and make sure not to bump it. I find it easier to just use a mesh hops bag.

        Works with modifications

I believe the Blichmann hopblocker was designed to work with Blichmann kettles. I found it necessary to design a siphon tube for my kettle. After doing so it worked great. Would recommend this product to any home brewer that likes to design/build.

        Does what it says

It's simple. You want to block those hops from entering your carboy or worse your Blichmann Therminator? Use this. I have tried other methods from cheap to expensive and this elegantly solves the problem of proteinaceous matter while maintaining a good siphon. Yeah. Those other methods often end up with a crazy vacuum that will leave a gallon or more of your wort in your kettle. Once again Blichmann delivers with a solution so simple it makes you wish you had a large quantity of high-quality stainless steel to make your own fancy devices. Or you can just buy this one.
