    A Quick Overview – Wine Analysis Procedures with the SC-300:

    Easy SO2 Test

    1. Attach SO2 electrode, press the power button, change to SO2 mode and press enter.
    2. Draw up 5 mL of titrant into the syringe and place 25 mL of wine in beaker.
    3. Add ~2 mL of the acidifier and ~2 mL of the reactant to wine.
    4. Place and hold the SO2 electrode in the wine sample and swirl beaker.
    5. Add titrant from syringe dropwise until 15 second long endpoint signal reached.
    6. Multiply the titration volume by 20, the SO2 conversion factor, results in ppm Free SO2.

    Simple pH Test

    1. Attach the pH electrode, set aside storage solution, rinse with DI water and blot gently with a paper towel.
    2. Press the power button then press the ‘Mode’ button and switch the SC-200 into ‘Cal’ mode.
    3. Calibrate using the pH 4 and pH 7 reference standards provided. Put the SC-200 in pH mode.
    4. Take 5 mL sample of wine, place in a beaker. Take a pH reading.

    Accurate TA Test

    1. For TA test, withdraw 5 mL of the TA Titrant with the syringe.
    2. Take 5 mL wine sample and add ~15 mL of deionized water.
    3. Put SC-200 into TA mode, place clean pH electrode gently in solution.
    4. Add TA Titrant from the syringe dropwise until the endpoint is reached indicated with the visual and audible signals. Record the volume (in mL) of titrant used.
    5. Multiply the titrantion volume by 2, the TA conversion factor, results in g/L Tartaric Acid.

        I got my kit from CellarScience as they always have great products. First off the test works great. But I do have some issues. They give you enough acid standard to run hundreds of test. They are very generous with paper and capillary tubes. My lower rating is due to the jar and the developer. The 4 oz bottle of developer will not nearly do the 25 pages of test. The jar has a ridge in the bottom. When you set the paper in it makes it tilt over and it also raises the paper on an angle which makes it barely touch the liquid. I would have thought that the kit would contain enough developer to use up the stack of paper. The pix shows an 8 oz bottle of developer. Perhaps a mistake?

        My 1st Refractometer

        This is a neat device. Some things that may assist you are: 1.) first test it with distilled water and adjust accordingly via the circular piece on the bottom. You can use a flat head or your finger. Note the entire plastic movable flap must be covered in liquid to produce an accurate reading. 2.) refractometers should be used to measure the sugars in the mash and after the boil. Note this device measures accurately at 20 Celsius (68 Fahrenheit) so if you take a reading below or higher than 20 Celsius then search for a refractometer correction chart in Google to aid in adjusting for the temperature difference. 3.) this refractometer is not designed to read final gravity due to alcohol being more dense which makes the final gravity appear lower. I've heard of some that do read alcohol but some people say they are not accurate (off by 10% abv or so). The cheapest and sure way is to have a hydrometer and a hydrometer jar to measure the final gravity. Use the refractometer for everything else because it's faster and waste less wort. 4.) this refractometer is designed to be used with natural light so the better the light the clearer the lines of your reading.

        absolutely needed for Brewzilla Gen4 but.....

        absolutely needed for Brewzilla Gen4 because without it you're literally flying blind as to what the temperature of the actual mash is. The integrated temp probe at the bottom of the brewery can reach and overshoot target temps much faster than the mash temp. The problem is that it is cheaply made like much of Kegland's electronic devices and incredibly there is no way to calibrate it. First one I bought (from another vendor) went way out of calibration just before the warranty. The one I bought here died after just a month and two uses.

        Wonderful to use but there are Hidden Charges

        I've been very impressed with my unit and couldn't go back to my old methods of measuring SG. I am however very annoyed at the hidden charges for storing information within the app. After 10 batches a fee of $39.99 is now required that is scandalous. Nowhere was this information visible when I purchased my init from MoreBeer. I guess Anton Par assumes that once you've brewed 10 bathes you now qualify as "Pro". This is an expensive quality instrument please don't cheat us once we've purchased it.

        Works just like it did 10 yrs ago when I bought it

        I've had this going on 10 years now. Works reliably and as intended. The materials used have not shown any sign of degradation and still work as good as it did through hundreds of brews. I use this as my after boil chill loop to make sure wort is good temp before sending it to the fermenter. - magicalpancake

        Seems to work ok.

        The unit had to be calibrated right out of the box. No big deal I had bought ph calibrating solution. I tried the 7.0 solution and the meter read 6.8. I adjusted it like the directions said. I then tried it in test solution that was 4.0 and it was spot on. The reason for the 3 stars is when I opened the battery compartment to pull out the insulating strip the battery in the center was exploded. I took them out and a metal clip fell out too. I got that put back in and got some fresh batteries. It takes 3 batteries and there is no way they fit. All 3 fit in the compartment but there was so much space they could not begin to make contact. I had to jam a wad of aluminum foil into the space at the end of the row of batteries. The meter seems to work ok. But gee I really didn't think economy meant poor quality. It works but I really do not recommend this product.

        Very easy to use all you need to get precise information on OG final gravity ABV of the final product. When I got my hands on this equipment my life became much easier and happier! P.S. very quick replies from customers service Highly recommend for brewers

        While pricey it's worth it.

        I watched all of the videos and the speed and accuracy of this device is mind blowing. The smartref opens a lot of doors from beer to meed to fruited beer to checking your glycol concentration on your glycol chiller or more... they have multiple apps depending on the use and still curious to try some of the other features. It takes about two seconds to give you a number and a temp. Heartily recommend this bad boy

        Can't answer my own questions on MB so....

        I wrote a series of questions to Anton Paar after submitting them to MoreBeer. It won't let me post a response to my own question so I hope this helps....: ------- 1)Just to be clear: You're saying I can obtain an accurate (within half a percent) ABV reading without any kind of Original Gravity record? Yes the combination of EasyDens with SmartRef allow the measurement of density and refractive index. By knowing these two measurement values it is possible to calculate the ABV with an accuracy of 0.5 % v/v. 2) If I'm measuring fruited / adjunct beers is the ABV% reading still reliable and in the same 0.5% margin of error? Unfortunately it does not work if you add fruits. In this case there is additional sugar which influences the measurement and the result will be incorrect. 3) On the 'SmartRef' individual item page on MoreBeer they have this statement "EasyDens gives accurate readings at any point during fermentation without the need for an original reading." Does this mean I can pull ABV without an OG measurement with just EasyDens (rather than as part of the EasyDens-SmartRef combo) No this is not correct. You cannot measure ABV of beer using only EasyDens. If you are just using EasyDens for alcohol calculation you will need OG and FG. But EasyDens does the calculation of the estimated alcohol content fully automatically. 4) On the EasyDens individual page MoreBeer has this statement: Features Free: Basic features and all measurement units Premium features: Free for one year". Given that Is ABV-without-OG considered a measurement unit or a premium feature? You can perform 10 ABV measurements per month for free if you need more ABV measurements per month you will need the premium version. 4.a) Eitherway what are the costs of the premium features of the apps and what are those premium features? Information about in-app purchases can be found in your Apple App Store or Google Play Store. There are several premium features like Temperature coefficient free selectable Higher resolution for most measurement values Unlimited batches in the app Unlimited ABV measurements two different units free selectable on the display I hope this information is helpful to you.         Right Price Accurate Take care of it.

        I bought this without knowing anything about ph meters and was happy Morebeer recommended the storage solution. As many have said mine came a bit dry and had crystals in the cap. Kind of hard to avoid if you ask me but I re-hydrated with the storage solution and then did a 3 point calibration with no problem. Immediately tested distilled water and got the expected ph and used on my first brew day since I got it and it worked well. I'm not certain the typical protocol but I found taking a small sample of the mash or boiling wort into a glass jar (not a large sample) and letting it cool just slightly was better than dunking it in boiling wort or hot mash. I'm pretty sure if you take care of this keep some storage solution in the sealed cap it will last as much as you need. I did notice that I got the very best results especially during calibration if you religiously rinse the probe with distilled water between each test.

        Works Great!

        Works great. I've had my SC-300 since 2017. The SO2 measurements were always questionable. With this new probe they are easy repeatable and believable. I probably should have returned the original probe for replacement. The new probe is great!!

        Hydrometer with temp adjustment

        Easy temperature adjustment in this device. No need to make actual temperature adjustment for accurate SP Gravity reading. No looking up in a chart for correct adjustment.

        I was looking to start canning with small line I recently purchased and this device was must have. It is imperative to have the correct volume CO2 when packaging. Quality beer and packaging separates you from the rest of the herd.

        Overall I think this is a great product. I am still working on really calibrating as the calibration in distilled water still leaves my higher gravity readings several points lower than my actual hydrometer when I compare the two. For monitoring the actual fermentation and temperature however this has been a very handy tool. It's great to know when your beer hits your FG!
