KegLand Oxebar Mono PET Keg | Plastic Reusable Bottle | Cary Handle & Reusable Screw Cap Included | 1 Gallon | 4L

    Description

This 1-gallon keg is lightweight, compact and has high oxygen barrier properties with 3x better (meaning less) gas transmission than traditional PET grades of plastic making it suitable for beer storage or other oxygen sensitive carbonated and non-carbonated beverages.

This product is sold with the PCO38 cap, however if you would like to dispense this product through a draft system, we recommend the use of the Ball Lock Adapter Tapping Head. The tapping head is sold separately and allows you to attach standard ball lock disconnects and pressure relief valve to the top of the keg.

    What is Oxebar Mono
Oxebar Mono is a PET polymer blend that utilizes several polymers blended together to significantly improve gas barrier properties. When compared with standard PET plastic, Oxebar Mono is able to reduce oxygen ingress and CO2 loss so your precious beverage is preserved and shelf life extended by 3x. We recommend this product for beer storage of up to 6 months.

    • Made from Nylon impregnated PET for superior oxygen barrier
    • Wedge seals on the optional Tapping Head and Ball Lock Caps eliminate points of oxygen ingress found where rubber is traditionally used
    • Lower total oxygen pickup compared to a standard corny keg lid seal

    Dimensions:

    • Diameter: 6.1" (155 mm)
    • Height: 12.7" (325 mm)
    • Pressure Rating: 58 psi (4 BAR)
    • Temperature Rating: 113°F (45°C)

    KegLand Part Number: KL2487

NOTE: Oxebar kegs are marked with a manufacturer’s “expiry date”. This does not indicate that the keg is bad after this date; it simply indicates that a hydro test may be in order. 2 years after production and every 2 years after first use, it is recommended that the keg be hydro tested to ensure the tank is holding pressure. Hydro test instructions are available here. You will also need the KG520 Tapping Head and D1072 Green PRV to perform the test. If you do not plan to pressurize the keg, the test is not necessary.

Get some teflon tape and new O-rings

You'll need to buy the dispensing cap which is another $20 but that's not a big deal considering what you get for the money. I use them for fermentation under pressure (10-20 psi) with a spunding valve and then as kegs. They fit pretty easily into a refrigerator for lager or wine. Very convenient all-in-one package. Unfortunately the design isn't completely ironed out yet as leaks are pretty common. You'll need to wrap all the threading with teflon tape and you'll want new O-rings for the posts as connections are prone to leaking as well.

Hands down must have for 1 gal batches

I specifically ordered this instead of a mini-keg that cost almost the same as a 5-gal keg. Works like a charm. I also do not have to fill bottles anymore so I save time transferring from FV to this keg. I also ordered the ball lock adapter. No issues with leaks there. As for the quality of the oxebar it does seem to have a bit of a thinner side which can dent if pushed in too hard. At the price of a replacement I would absolutely buy another if needed before I forked over what a mini-keg would cost. Other factors to consider are cost of a min-regulator and sodastream CO2 if that is the route you go. It can get expensive but for me it works perfectly.

Does the job for a fair price

Note that you need the ball lock dispensing cap if you want to serve via tap. Pros: They are inexpensive compared to the 1 gallon mini kegs. If you make small batches or test batches (like I do) it's an exexpensive way to keg carbonate and serve much like any ball lock keg. Of course cleaning is not as easy (just like the mini keg) because of the size of the opening but you know that before you buy it and should be ready to deal with it. Cons: My only issue is the shape of the bottom. Many kegerators have non-flat contoured floors and these kegs don't like to stand up on that floor. There are work-arounds but this is why I took one star. Yes I recommend this and will buy it again (with the ball lock cap) if I need more. I do like the mini keg better (with the ball lock cap) but it's more than twice the price at the time of this review and this does the job just fine.

How big is the opening? Is this just like a normal 2 liter opening?

        MoreWine

They use a PCO 38 cap which is 38mm. It's not a normal 2 liter opening they use a 28mm.

        MoreWine

I just had some of these delivered yesterday and it is not a standard 2 liter opening it is larger. I cannot seem to find a ball lock fitting for the PC038 thread they call standard aside from the tapping head made by kegland which is currently out of stock. Was hoping to use these to force carbonate before delivering to my friends in growlers. If anyone comes across a ball lock fitting that fits this I also would be interested.

How do you clean this? What's the recommended procedure/agent?

        MoreWine

I use terry cloths with regular dish soap. Then sanitize with starsan. I don't pressure ferment with this which is why I use dish soap.

        MoreWine

Don’t know if there is specific procedure they can be tricky. I try and do it quickly use oxyclean and TSP mix along with a brush as needed. Sometimes I soak it too if needed.

        MoreWine

Just use PBW the same strength as for cleaning tubing etc. you’ll need a carboy brush and no problem.

        MoreWine

Normal brewery cleaners and sanitizers are fine on PET. Just keep it out of the sun and don't scrub with hard bristles

        MoreWine

I just use PBW then sanitize with Starsan.

        MoreWine

I do an hour hot soak with PBW then follow it up with a rinse out then hit it up with StarSan. Do not use brushes!

        MoreWine

I treat these much like other PET jugs and fermenters. Add hot water (not over 140F ... I use tap water which tops around 120F) with PBW or other cleaning agent and shake. No brushes or other instruments that could scratch the surface. Rinse thoroughly and air dry.
