FerMonster 6 Gallon Carboy With Spigot

    Description

The Ported Fermonster is a brand new fermenter designed specifically for fermentation. We gave product feedback for over 2 years of development and we think they nailed the design. The large lid allows for easy filling and makes hop or oak additions a breeze. The smooth sides are fantastic for sanitization - no ribs or texture to collect yeast or bacteria.  The 6 gallon size is great for most fermentations, and the larger 7 gallon is available for even bigger beers. The punted bottom allows sediment to collect to the sides so that you can siphon liquid from the center.  Because they are made from virgin PET plastic they nearly unbreakable and a lot safer than similar glass carboys. Also notice the conical top which reduces surface area if you plan to store beer or wine long term.

These ported versions come with our plastic spigot (FE347), allowing for easy racking and sampling!

Made from heavy PET plastic, the same material used in 2 L soda bottles, which is nearly impermeable to oxygen penetration.  Due to the thickness of the material and the overall geometry the Fermonster does not require ribs or dimples for stability.  That results in a super smooth interior surface that reduces yeast and sediment buildup making it the easiest to clean, most sanitary PET carboy on the market.  The huge 4" opening makes filling a breeze, and cleanup is as easy as wiping down the inside.  Fermonsters are easily moved by hand or consider using our Carboy Carrier for even greater ease of use.

These fermentors are completely air-tight and the lids sealed tight with an O-Ring.  Additional O-Rings and Lids both with and without holes are available for purchase, see our You Might Also Need items below.

Good for many uses but mysteriously cracked

This has been great for lagering in my fridge and secondary for wine ferments. Haven't had too many issues for the first few batches other than it being a bit unwieldy. Unfortunately I just pulled it out to use as a secondary for a cabernet and realized there's a large crack in the interior of the bottom. Doesn't seem like it goes all the way through but don't trust it with any weight and it's an infection vector. Not sure how it got there as I haven't had any impacts or drops with it. I just bought another to replace it since I'm hoping it was a fluke and they're just about the most cost effective option for this type of fermenter. So hopefully I don't regret the replacement but if more cracks show up I'll have to move on to another type of fermenter.

Good quality and much less expensive than stainless fermenter’s

Would recommend. My go to for fermenting home brew. I like to see what’s going on.

I like this fermentor because of its smooth surface. It doesn't have a lot of molded 'bubble' features which harbor crud from being cleaned. The spigot make transfers easier. My only to quibbles are. 1.) The mouth is a bit too narrow to allow my massive forearms access for cleaning and 2.) the graduations are hard to discern - I had to highlight them with a sharpie. Minor quibbles.

It works fine doesn’t seem to be anything special though kind of expensive in my opinion

        It's great with a caveat

I like this and will continue to use but it's not perfect. First of all the plastic is very thin which in itself isn't that big of a problem but coupled with the fact the lid is incredibly hard to remove (hence they sell a lid remover) even when barely tightened that makes the thin side walls a small concern. While trying to get the lid off AND hold the fermenter the sides literally crushed in. Luckily the fermenter was empty or otherwise there would have been beer all over the place. I use a giant pair of slip-joint pliers now when removing the lid but the easily crushed sides are still a concern. But I do like it even with these small issues.

Great product to meet my needs and round out my equipment

Only issue is that of the three carboys I was able to install the spigot on only one with the supplied (1) tapered washer without it leaking. Luckily I had extra spigots on hand for my 6.5 gallon primary buckets and used the flat washers from them to prevent the leaks. They may just want to consider providing two flat washers.

        Great Fermenter

Works great for long term sours. Seems to be one of the better options out there for "non-glass" carboys.

        good deal for price

So far great experience with this carboy. Easy to clean. Advantage of glass is that you can easily transport it when you have 5+ gallons of beer in it

        Works well

I have the competition's version of this also so here's what I'll say. The lid is a definitive improvement but the competition's lid was never as big of a problem for me as others have indicated. The smooth texture is slitely easier to clean and finally the plastic walls seem a little thicker just judging by the way it feels while handling it both full and empty. Speaking from experience if your considering a large opening fermenter they are the way to go and much easier to clean.

        Makes cleanup easy

Better than using a bucket with a spigot because you can see how fermentation is proceeding.

Not as great as the glass fermenters but they're light easy to clean and don't break if you accidentally drop them..

        Love them

These are so much easier to clean that the competitor's version with all of the dimples. My first Fermonster was great but the second with spigot is even better. The lid removal tool is a must.

        Awesome!

I own 6 Fermonsters. They are pretty much the ideal fermentation vessel in my opinion. I use a #10 breathable silicone airlock. Clear. Ported. Wide mouth. Lightweight. Safe. Compact. Punted. Low oxygen permeability. Can do pressurized transfers. Seal well. Inexpensive. Designed to minimize headspace. What more could you want? Want to harvest the yeast cake? Swirl and pour. Warm PBW soak between batches to clean and remove flavors.

Amazing device. Only issue is you have to tweak the spigot for a bit so you do not get any leaks.

Wall of the fermenter is too thin.

I bought two of these plastic fermenters. Positives: The volume is ideal for a 5 gal brew and the large mouth is great for cleaning. Negatives: The plastic is very thin and one of the spigots is very difficult to open and close. It may improve once the parts wear.

        The O-ring DOES fit

While the O-ring for the lid is a little difficult to get in if you watch the video on the product page that demonstrates installing it the process is much easier and less frustrating. It really will fit and after that it's an awesome product as a great price. The port really makes racking so much easier and the wide mouth opening makes cleaning a breeze.

        Fermonster is a good addition

Like the fermonster. Easier to move than glass which I'd used exclusively for years. Have yet to utilize the spigot feature - have a brett pale going that's going to take a while until bottling. This one will be a dedicated sour/wild fermenter. Seems the wide opening will make it simple to clean. Had a slight issue with the rubber stopper staying in place on the lid but easily solved with Teflon plumber tape. Good addition to my supply of fermenters. Will get more.

        Great product

The Fermonster was great. I found it easy to indtall the gasket and the spigot. Although the 4 inch opening is wide my arm could not fit to get the spigot in but my wife helped there. The seal was great. The bubler worked great and allowed me to monitor the fermentation process with ease. The entire thing cleaned up nicely after the 2 week fermentation time. I can't wait to get my next batch going.

        Good overall fermenting solution.

I purchased 4 of each size of these. They are a good solution to broken glass and are a bit easier to handle with the accessory carrier straps. A must when handling nearly 45lbs of wort. Love the wide mouth for ease of cleaning. Yes the stopper hole is way oversized (the company must have found a good deal on drill bits?) solution is to buy solid lids and drill to #7 yourself. Solved! Screw on lid can be over tightened small strap wrench or oil filter wrench agin solves your He-man issue. Friend has Bubbler units w/ old style screw lids they changed the lid style before I could purchase and these have been a great solution. Love them and would recommend them to anyone interested in a non-glass fermenting solution. Only have 4 stars because of the lid hole size and the O rings can be a booger to get seated.

        great product.

Using this product now I love it. 2 things I wish it was a little thicker and it had handles or a carrier strap-harness it works very well. The order was shipped very fast the company was very knowledgeable to the few questions I had. Very pleased.

        Not Sure Yet?

So the bottle itself is great. Nice wide opening so it should be very easy to clean however if your arm is much over 13" in diameter it will be a tight fit. As of now I have not used this carboy yet because I am having Morebeer look into an issue with the lid. The hole in the lid is for a #10 stopper and not your standard #7. So the problem is how to use my thermwell that has a two hole #7 stopper. Furthermore it is suggested that you use a Buon Vino style #10 stopper others have noted that a regular #10 stopper has a tendency to pop out. Therefore it seems what ideally is needed is a Buon Vino #10 stopper with two holes if you want to use a thermwell. Anyway I will wait and see what Morebeer has to say when they call me back. As of now my opinion is that this product may just need a V2 lid redesign perhaps like the one used on the Speidel Plastic Storage tank or a small hole with a rubber washer to slide the thermwell in? IDK

        Great large and clear fermenter

As far as the ability to monitor your fermentation and reach your hand in there and clean it it's great. My problem is I cannot get the lid to screw off as it seems stuck. And since the unit is very smooth all the way around it's very hard to get a grip on it since it turns as I try to unscrew the lid making it very cumbersome. Maybe I just screwed it on too tight. Ill probably have to get a large pair of channel locking pliers to get a good grip on it. Maybe they should make a tool that can unscrew the lid. Tip: Don't screw the lid on too tight!

I'm thinking of using this for the clearing step for 6 gallon wine kits but it seems that the wide mouth would provide a lot more surface area than the narrow neck of a standard carboy with a lot more potential oxygen exposure. The description mentions the 'conical top which reduces surface area'. What does that mean?

        MoreWine

I rarely end up with exactly 6 gallons to completely fill a carboy so the small neck of the glass carboy does not provide any benefit. Once you get near the top the sloping shoulder (“conical top”) of the FerMonster does slightly reduce surface area versus a typical glass carboy. Regardless I usually top off with a little CO2 or inert gas to minimize oxygen contact. The big selling points for me are that the plastic is way lighter and easier to manage the wide mouth makes it SO much easier to clean and the spigot makes racking a breeze.

        MoreWine

The conical top is where you see the whole carboy narrowing toward the lid there. You're right that the surface area is greater than that of a regular carboy shape. Also since it's plastic there will be a tiny bit of oxygen that gets through the walls over time too. Pretty much if you're not storing your wine for longer than two weeks while it clarifies you shouldn't really have any issues.
