MonsterMesh Strainer for FermMonster Carboys

    Description

This mesh sleeve is custom made for the FerMonster Plastic Carboy. The plastic ring sits inside the neck of the fermenter, and the lid can be secured on top to make an airtight seal. The ring actually holds onto the neck of the FerMonster so there's no risk of the mesh sleeve falling into the carboy.

For brewers, the MonsterMesh is perfect for adding dry hops, oak chips, or fruit additions, which can easily be removed at the scheduled time.

For winemakers, in addition to adding grape skins or oak chips, the MonsterMesh is a great way to eliminate head space in the fermenter. Simply fill up the strainer with glass marbles to displace as much wine as needed to fill the volume of the carboy.

Made from food grade materials, the #50 mesh will not affect the flavor of the beer or wine, and is temperature rated to 122°F. Designed for multiple uses, the MonsterMesh can be cleaned in the dishwasher and sanitized with the sanitizer of your choice.

The MonsterMesh can be used alongside the MiniMesh to hold multiple additions. The MonsterMesh will sit on the neck of the carboy, and the MiniMesh can be inserted through the stopper hole in the lid. This way you can have two different infusions starting or stopping at different times.

        Almost great

This is a great product and a great idea but it does need a little help. The gasket fits well - and honestly should have been the gasket system they used for Fermonster to begin with. It's a sturdy rubber material that form fits the inside edge of the Fermonster and provides a really good seal against the cap. Again they should have used a version of this instead of the o-ring cap insert The hops bag is molded into the gasket and is well-made from a lightweight nylon-like mesh. As others have said hops float and when you put them in this bag they will still float. I dont see that as a downside just a reality. This is how I fixed it. Get yourself some jarring/pickling weights. These are glass weights that fit inside a mason jar and i put one in the bottom of the mesh bag put the hops on top and then another one on top of the hops. Weighs the whole thing down and I get full beer to hops contact. Would it be better if it was stainless steel? Yes but then you would be paying $30 for it not $6. And for $6 it's worth it for the headache free gasket alone.

Will this work with the Fermzilla All Rounders?

        MoreWine

The FermZilla is shaped to work well within the supplied metal base. Once filled with wort you will not want to move again until emptied at the end of process. The overall shape makes this tool an excellent tabletop candidate.

Gonna use this for my next brew. Should I start with this attached? Then when time to add hops just remove stopper and airlock and drop the hops in? Will be using pellets.

        MoreWine

Yes doing it this way will reduce oxygen exposure. Good luck with your brew!

        MoreWine

I think u can do it either way--i put it in when i dry hopped or added solid flavoring Ie:coconut or orange peel etc

        MoreWine

You can either put it in at the beginning of fermentation or when first dry hopping as long as it’s sterilized (and being mindful of oxygen). One suggestion I would make is to place some marbles or something equivalent (sterilized) in the bottom before adding hops to weight it down otherwise it may float and sit on top of the krausen. Cheers!

Will this fit with the 3 gallon sized FerMonster?

        MoreWine

It fits the 5 gallon version

        MoreWine

Yes it fits the 3 gallon size. And you can use the glass marbles to take up about a half gallon space to keep it topped up.

What is the volume or capacity of the strainer?

        MoreWine

I would say a quart. A little bigger than my large hop bags

        MoreWine

This depends on what you are putting in it. It will easily hold more than a pound of pellets. Probably just a pound of buds. No problem with 2lbs of heather. It all depends on the size of what you are using. I also wouldn't consider this a strainer. It is more of an infusion container. I use it for dry hopping. It does not attach well enough to consider using it to strain.

        MoreWine

This is a great question simply put It's BIG ! Being a fine mesh I dry hop with pelts with very little hops beading off into my finished beer. .

Don't you want your hops submerged? Cool idea but it looks like they will float and you will not get all their flavor.

        MoreWine

Just an Idea put your hops and marbles in the bag and then tie something around the bag below the level of your wort. Thinking plastic bread wrapper clip string fishing line or maybe one of those small plastic hose clamps something that can be sanitized.

        MoreWine

You’re not wrong you can use a marble but it only keeps the bottom of the bag down and does nothing to keep the hips submerged.

        MoreWine

You're right. It doesn't work - I tried it once and haven't used it again. Bad decision on my part to buy it.
